Winter vetch has smaller seeds than the spring variety, is hardier and gives less bulk of stems and leaves.

Spring vetch grows more rapidly and luxuriantly than the winter variety, but is a more delicate plant.

Vetches are more tolerant of water logging than other legumes and of a wide range of pH than other legumes.

Vetches can be mixed with Italian or hybrid Ryegrasses as a cover crop to boost yield and protein levels in the sowing year. The residual nitrogen can also boost aftermath yields. To avoid damage to undersown leys Vetches should be removed if they lodge.

Vetches can also be mixed with cereals or cereals and peas for wholecrop silage.
